I'm installing a 3' vinyl fence. Can I cut post covers in half to save money?

The fence is a 3' picket fence. Vinly post covers are fairly expensive and come in 100" sections. Since only 4' of the post is above ground, can I cut the post covers in half and have the wooden post go deeper then the vinyl covering? I'm planning on setting the posts in concrete with gravel at the bottom.
